Cotton tote bags 140 or 220 g/m²: which weight should you choose for printing?

You are choosing cotton tote bags for a company, an agency or a shop, and you see two weights on offer: 140 and 220 g/m². The difference looks small, but it affects how the bag looks, how long it lasts and how the print performs. Below is a simple way to choose.

Cotton tote bags 140 vs 220 g/m²: use, carton size, embroidery and printing compared

What bag weight means

Weight (grammage) is the mass of one square metre of fabric in grams. The higher it is, the thicker, heavier and stiffer the fabric. A 140 g/m² bag is light and soft. A 220 g/m² bag is clearly thicker, has more "body" and holds its shape better.

140 g/m²: light and economical

  • good for conference materials, campaigns and giveaways in large quantities,
  • more bags fit in a carton: 200 pcs per carton,
  • the soft fabric takes DTF printing and screen printing well,
  • works when the bag is a one-off carrier for your logo or a light shopping bag.

220 g/m²: thick and durable

  • looks and feels like a bag made to last, so it is more often reused after the campaign,
  • the thicker fabric usually handles embroidery and heavier shopping better,
  • gives a more premium impression, which is why hotels, beauty brands and institutions often choose it,
  • a carton holds 100–150 pcs (depending on the model).

How to choose: three questions

  1. How long should the bag last? If it will be used once or a few times, 140 g/m² is enough. If it should be a bag your customer carries for months, choose 220 g/m².
  2. What marking do you plan? Embroidery looks best on thicker fabric. For DTF or screen printing both weights give a good result.
  3. What is the quantity and budget? For large runs the price difference per piece matters, which is why 140 g/m² is a frequent choice for campaigns.

FAQ

Is 220 g/m² a lot?

It is a thick fabric, clearly heavier than typical promotional bags. It works where the bag will be used for a long time.

Which weight should I choose for a conference or trade fair?

Usually 140 g/m²: it is lighter and more bags fit in a carton, which matters in large runs.

Does the weight affect the print?

We do DTF and screen printing on both weights. Embroidery looks best on the thicker fabric.

How many pieces must I order?

Bags without printing from one carton. For marking the minimums are: DTF from 50 pcs, embroidery from 100 pcs, screen printing from 500 pcs.
